Autumn is the ideal time to check your lawn for signs of summer wear and tear and set it in good stead for the season ahead. A few straightforward maintenance tasks now will allow the grass to respond to any treatment before soil temperatures drop.
As the weather gets cooler the grass will grow less, so it is important to raise the cutting height of your mower and reduce the frequency of mowing. Be guided by the weather and watch growth rates.
‘Thatch’ (dead moss, grass and debris) can build up on lawns between grass roots and foliage. Deep layers can prevent water penetration and stifle growth. Build-up can be prevented by regular raking (Scarifying), and autumn is the ideal time for this as new growth will not be damaged.
Aeration is vital for a healthy lawn; it helps grass roots grow deeply, preventing the soil from becoming too compact. Aeration also helps deter the effects of drought or water-logging. Smaller areas can be spiked with a garden fork, or use the STIHL MultiSystem with its aerator and scarifier to manage both tasks effortlessly. After aerating, apply a top dressing and then water the lawn on a dry day to improve soil texture.
